June 2026 | OLVIA S.R.L.

The edible oil industry has long relied on experience, manual controls, and periodic laboratory testing to maintain product quality. At OLVIA S.R.L., we are taking a different approach — integrating artificial intelligence and automated process control into our refinery operations from day one.

Why AI in an Oil Refinery?

Sunflower oil refining is a complex, multi-stage process: degumming, neutralization, bleaching, deodorization, and winterization. Each stage involves precise temperature control, chemical dosing, residence times, and quality checkpoints. A small deviation at any stage can affect the final product — color, free fatty acid content, peroxide value, taste, or shelf life.

Traditional control systems react to problems after they occur. AI-based systems predict and prevent them.

Where We Apply AI and Automation

1. Process Control & Optimization

Our refinery uses automated process control systems that continuously monitor and adjust key parameters — temperatures, pressures, flow rates, chemical dosing — in real time. AI algorithms analyze historical production data to identify optimal operating conditions and automatically fine-tune the process for maximum efficiency and minimum waste.

2. Quality Control

Instead of relying solely on end-of-batch laboratory testing, we implement inline quality monitoring — sensors that continuously measure key quality indicators during production. AI models flag deviations before they affect the finished product.

Key parameters monitored in real time:

  • Free Fatty Acid (FFA) content
  • Peroxide Value (PV)
  • Color (Lovibond scale)
  • Moisture content
  • Phosphorus residuals (post-degumming)

3. Predictive Maintenance

Our maintenance program uses sensor data and AI-based predictive analytics to detect early signs of wear or failure in pumps, heat exchangers, filters, and other critical equipment — scheduling maintenance before breakdowns occur, not after.

4. Energy Efficiency

AI-driven energy management continuously optimizes steam consumption, heat recovery, and electricity usage across the plant. In a refinery processing 200 TPD, even a 5–10% reduction in energy consumption translates into significant cost savings and a lower carbon footprint.

5. Traceability & Documentation

Every batch is automatically logged — raw material inputs, process parameters, quality measurements, and final product specifications. This creates a complete digital traceability chain from incoming crude oil to finished refined product, supporting HACCP, EU food safety compliance, and customer audits.

Our Vision: The Smart Refinery

At OLVIA, we believe the future of edible oil production is data-driven. A refinery that learns from every batch, adjusts in real time, and continuously improves — not just in quality, but in efficiency and sustainability.

We are building this capability into our Galați Free Zone facility from the ground up, partnering with international automation and technology suppliers to ensure our plant operates at the highest level from day one of commercial production.
